              2/ the backend runs on @matrixdotorg and i modified the cactus client a bit to be more like old fashioned chat. matrix is a decentralized conversation store with convos replicated by participant homeservers so there is no single point of control/failure

            2b/ (the client on the site is stateless so it does not save any of your data and communicates directly with the matrix servers. only an access token is stored in your browser so you can stay logged in)

          3/ to join gooolchat, just create a matrix account on a server of your choice via element.io (matrix.org is the all purpose public one.) ideally, everyone would self-host for more decentralization, full data control, etc. but that's not always possible

        4/ after you set up your profile in element (username looks like @name:domain.com, log in on gooolos to start chatting, shitposting, whatever. the room is public & visible to anyone so keep that in mind. if spam gets bad, i'll prob have to switch it to invite only 🤷🏻‍♀️

      5/ bonus: bc this runs on the open matrix protocol, it means you can also access the room from a wide assortment of clients. the main matrix client is element.io which you can install on your phone and get notis, etc.

    6/ the element interface is similar to discord and lets you access all your matrix spaces/rooms in one place. but there are a lot of other options to suit your preference, even cli 👩🏻‍💻 matrix.org/clients/

      7/ this is just kind of an experiment while everyone’s trying to figure out what happens “after” twitter. i might swap out different things along the way. i'm also interested in looking more at stuff like @farcaster_xyz and @AtProtocol_ when they become more open access

          end/ things might be a little buggy while i try to figure out the kinks 😬 (like sometimes it displays your message twice on the site when you hit post. in the actual matrix room, it will only be showing once 🤷🏻‍♀️)
